Dr. Caroline Simard will kick off the 2008-2009 SPW year by presenting
new data about the obstacles facing women in Silicon Valley and
the solutions to their retention and advancement. The
Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology, in partnership
with the Clayman
Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University, is concluding
a major study on the obstacles and success factors facing women
in the technology industry entitled: Climbing the Technical Ladder:
Obstacles and Solutions for Mid-Level Women in Technology. This
groundbreaking study compares the experiences of men and women in
high tech companies and offers solid strategies to break down the
barriers to women's advancement.
At our SPW kickoff event, Dr. Simard will present new insights
on the status of women in technology companies, the obstacles they
face in their careers, and what strategies work to retain and advance
them. Her talk will also provide keen insight and examples of proven
strategies that women have implemented to advance their careers.
About the Speaker: Dr. Simard, a Stanford alumna with a
doctorate in communication studies, is an expert on organizational
behavior, gender, the diffusion of innovation, regional clusters
of innovation, and the high-technology industry. Dr. Simard is the
Director of Research for The Anita Borg Institute for Women and
Technology which provides resources and programs to help industry,
academia, and government recruit, retain, and develop women leaders
in high-tech.
We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be an
interesting and informative night. The evening will begin with a
networking reception for SPW members and guests, with filling hors
d'oeuvres, wine bar, and desserts, followed by our speaker. There
will be a Q&A period at the end of the talk during which you
will be able to ask Dr. Simard specific questions on topics that
interest you.
