SPW's 2004 annual holiday high tea was a great success!
Thirty-five of us gathered on Sunday, December 5, at
Lisa's Tea Treasures in Santana Row for Sumptuous Scones,
Sandwiches, Petits Fours in a unique and authentic Victorian
Tea Room serving a traditional afternoon tea. Old World
elegance abounded in the atmosphere of this beautifully
furnished shop. The tables were set with a full array
of traditional accouterments; linen tablecloths, delicate
fine china, tea cozies, strainers, and of course, gourmet
loose-leaf tea served in style and grace by servers
in full 19th century Victorian costume.
We all enjoyed the elegance of old Europe; high ceilings,
decorative molding, sumptuous drapes, and velvet and
tapestry chairs provided us with delightful atmosphere
and comfort. The event was marked with lively conversation
and much fun was had by all.

"It would make my heart sing
if women could come to understand each other more completelyenough
to collaborate, using similarities and differences,
to attack the problems that beleaguer women and their
families everywhere: poverty, violence, disease, malnutrition,
illiteracy, environmental degradation." Paola
Gianturco

If you missed the event, don't
miss the Museum! Bring your sisters, daughters, mothers
and friends. An edifice dedicated to the history, wisdom,
beauty, strength and success of women throughout the
world is something we should all celebrate.

SPW 2003-2004 Kickoff Event
Stanford Women's Changing Roles in the Workplace and
at Home
With Speaker Dr. Myra Strober, Founding Director of
Stanford Institute for Research on Women and Gender
Wednesday, September 22, 2004, 6-9:30pm
Fisher Conference Center, Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni
Center, Stanford Campus

Our kickoff event featured Dr. Myra Strober, a labor
economist and professor in the School of Education and
Graduate School of Business. Dr. Strober, who had had
several SPW members as her students, discussed progress
women have made in the workplace as well as challenges
we still face. She also discussed her book, The Road
Winds Uphill All the Way: Combining Work and Family
in the United States and Japan as well as citing
the need for comprehensive federal support for child
care in order for women to truly gain equality in the
workplace. A very lively Q &A discussion followed
as this topic proved to be of great interest to our
membership.
